Tikinagan hosts 12th annual charity golf tournament

Tikinagan's 12th annual Charity Golf Tournament raised approximately $14,000 for the Mamow Oshki Pimagihowin Fire Relief Fund.

Eighteen teams participated in the event, which took place Friday, September 14 at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club.

"We started out with some rain, but it turned into a beautiful day. Everyone we spoke to had a good time and we had really good feedback from our participants," said Service Manager Katherine Machimity, who organized the tournament. “Generous donations came in from various organizations and resources across our region and southern Ontario. The funds we raise go towards helping families in the north who experience house fires.”

Raising the bar each year

Over the past years, the tournament has been raising the bar on funds generated. Six years ago, the event raised $6,500, last year it raised $14,910. The tournament has generated about $65,000 over the last 12 years. The fund went towards helping 11 families last year, and one family in 2018 so far.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone from Tikinagan who volunteered, our staff association and of course all of our sponsors and donors,” said Machimity. “I really want to express my gratitude for the volunteers. To make this event happen as an agency, we couldn’t have done it without them.”

In addition to entry fees for the 2018 tournament, money was raised with a variety of games such as the men’s and ladies’ Long-Drive Events and Putting Competition. Prizes for these games included assorted gift baskets and gift cards. Madsen GM sponsored the hole-in-one prize, a new SUV. The prize created excitement but there was no winner this year.

Many businesses and donors sponsored the tournament with generous donations for the silent auction prizes. Some items included Perimeter Air return tickets, a golf bag, gift certificates, a foot massager, and many home and garden items. The silent auction welcomed golf tournament participants and Tikinagan employees, and ran throughout the day, wrapping up shortly after a prime rib dinner.

Congratulations to the winning teams

The first place team this year, The Four Wise Men, won with a score of 63. Team members were Charlie Roy, Randy Thompson, Scott Malcolm and Donnie Ferrero. Second place winners were Alvin Crane, Peter Mushquash, Jason Suprovich and Benson Love. Third place winners were the Gillons’ team; Doug Pierce, Myron Romaniuk, Rob Lawrence and Trent Kujansuu. First and second place winners won 50” televisions and iPads, and third place took home return tickets from Wasaya.

During the tournament, Tikinagan’s staff association hosted a BBQ which raised funds to go towards functions hosted by the group.

In true spirit of our service model, Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin (everyone working together to raise our children), this tournament brought people together for a worthy cause. Tikinagan thanks all the participants, teams, sponsors and volunteers for helping make this year’s tournament another successful fundraising event for helping families in crises.
